do I need a lung screening?
Lung cancer continues to show trends of not discriminating between smokers and non-smokers. Below are the risk factors warranting lung screening;
Cigarette smoking or ahistory of smoking
Patients between55- 74 years old
Family history (2 or more immediate relatives) of lung cancer
Secondhandsmoke exposure
Environmental exposure to asbestos, arsenic, nickel, chromium, tar and soot
Patients withHIV-infection
History of lung disease such as lung fibrosis or emphysema

Deciding the necessity of lung screening can be confusing. Essentially there are two factors determining the need for lung screening; risk factors and symptoms. If you fall within the risk factor group, the Ministry of Health recommends an annual screening. However, if you are actively presenting the symptoms listed above, you should schedule a consultation with our clinic to determine the cause and promptly treat the symptoms.
Lung screening does not just exclusively detect lung cancer. Lung screening can bring to light signs of other diseases and conditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Asthma, Pulmonary Fibrosis, Embolism, Lung Nodules, Interstitial Lung Disease, Pneumonia, and Lung Abscess. Lung screening is never a waste, even if your condition is not as dire as lung cancer.
Typically, a General Practitioner (GP) may recommend screening based on your symptoms.
